VAT Agent Services in Bangladesh

Non-resident entities conducting business in Bangladesh without a fixed place of business are required to appoint a VAT Agent in accordance with the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act, 2012, and the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Rules, 2016. This regulation has been effective since July 1, 2017. The appointed VAT Agent will act on behalf of the business entity in dealings with VAT authorities.

How a VAT Agent Operates in Bangladesh

1. VAT Agent Certification: The VAT Agent must obtain a VAT Agent certificate for the non-resident entity, typically valid for three years. Renewal can be requested prior to the certificate's expiration.

2. Notification to Authorities: After the VAT Agent is nominated, the non-resident entity must inform the National Board of Revenue (NBR) of this nomination. The NBR will then contact the VAT Agent to confirm their consent.

3. Responsibilities: The VAT Agent will be responsible for all activities related to the non-resident entity and will be jointly and severally liable for all dues, including taxes, fines, penalties, and interest imposed.

4. VAT Registration: The VAT registration for the economic activities managed by the VAT Agent will be in the name of the principal non-resident entity.
